The Maverick's Bridal Bargain - Christie Jeffries (HSE #2625 - June 2018)

Series: Montana Mavericks: The Lonelyhearts Ranch (Book 1)
            Montana Mavericks

Whose wedding is it, anyway?

Rust Creek Ramblings

Why is Cole Dalton planning a wedding? No one even knew the ex-Marine and rugged rancher was dating, and suddenly he has hired wedding planner Vivienne Shuster to coordinate his nuptials. Why has no one met his mystery bride? We here at the Gazette believe this engagement is fake. The sparks between Cole and his “wedding planner,” however, are strictly legit. Hang on to your invites, dear readers -- someone may still be walking down the aisle!

Terrific book. Viv is a wedding planner working for the boss from hell. The book opens as she has a meeting with Lydia and Zach (The Maverick's Bride-to-Order) to work on their wedding plans. She's just beginning to hear about a problem with choosing a best man when one of the candidates interrupts the meeting. Cole is the middle of the five brothers and is somewhat overprotective of his brothers. In this case, he had driven all the way from their ranch to where the meeting was, just because he had noticed that Zach's tire pressure was low and hadn't been able to reach him by phone.

I liked both Cole and Viv. Cole is a good guy who has always had a large protective streak, even as a kid. There were any number of stories about how he can't keep from stepping in when he thinks someone needs help. He is also carrying a pretty big load of guilty feelings because he blames himself for his mother's death. Viv is a woman who sometimes wonders about her work as a wedding planner. Her parents have always had a rocky relationship (married and divorced three times - to each other) which sometimes affects the way she looks at her couples. I really liked her attitude when she worked with the couples, as she did her best to provide what they wanted without forcing other things on them. This puts her at odds with her boss on a regular basis.

Cole and Viv struck sparks off each other from the moment they met. It was fun to see how distracted they'd get when they were near each other. As the plans went forward for Zach and Lydia's wedding, I loved watching Cole go from suspicious of Viv and her suggestions to respecting what she was able to do. I had to laugh at his amazement every time she was able to get people to cooperate with her vision or keep them from going overboard on something. When Cole witnessed the abuse that Viv had to take from Estelle, he just had to find a way to help. Hiring Viv to plan a wedding for him was his way of getting Estelle off her back. I couldn't help but laugh, because he had no idea what he was getting into. Between his brother's wedding and his fake one, Cole and Viv found themselves spending a lot of time together. With that time, the attraction between them continued to grow. Beyond the attraction, there was also a deeper connection. I liked the way that Viv came to understand what made Cole the way he was. Cole also understood the effect that her parents' relationship had on her ability to believe in happily-ever-after.

With as close as they were growing, it was only a matter of time before their deception blew up in their faces. I ached for Viv when it happened and really wanted her to sic Cole on Estelle. But she wasn't sure of his feelings for her, and her fears wouldn't let her be another of his rescues. Meanwhile, Cole thought that she was giving him the brush-off as he tried to figure out what his feelings for her were. I loved the discussion he had with his dad, giving him lots to think about when it came to his feelings for Viv. The ending was sweet and romantic, and I loved the way things worked out for them. There was a satisfying little twist in the epilogue that I really liked.

A Maverick To (Re)Marry - Christine Rimmer (HSE #2629 - July 2018)

Series: Montana Mavericks: The Lonelyhearts Ranch (Book 1)
            Montana Mavericks

Married -- and divorced! -- in secret…

Rust Creek Ramblings

Rust Creek Falls’ flirty cowboy and the shy, straight-A student -- a couple? We have it on good authority that not only were Derek Dalton and Amy Wainwright once an item, they were actually married! With Amy back in town for her friend’s wedding, how long before their secret past is revealed? Gather your rose petals, dear readers… We suspect these high school sweethearts may soon get a second chance at happily-wedded-after!

Very good story of second chances. Back in high school Amy and Derek had been a couple, then secretly married that summer. The marriage ended as quickly as it began, leaving both of them heartbroken before they moved on with their lives. Neither has forgotten the other, though each has coped in different ways. Derek has become something of a flirt, avoiding any hint of commitment. Amy threw herself into school, then her job in Colorado, and has avoided returning to Rust Creek Falls. Now her best friend's wedding has forced her back.

I enjoyed the development of Amy and Derek's relationship. I liked their first meeting. Though both had been dreading it, they behaved like adults since they had to work together for their friends' wedding. Things were still a bit rough at the beginning since both had to come to terms with seeing each other again. They continued to avoid each other until they realized they had to face their pasts. I loved how they opened up and talked honestly about what had happened and their feelings at the time. It also became clear to them that the attraction is still there also. I had to laugh a little at their plan to be friends again, with maybe a little more to it, and explore what was happening - and keep it a secret. They're in Rust Creek Falls, where people are observant and know everyone's business anyway.

I loved seeing Amy and Derek find the magic that had been there before. It was a terrific mix of old and new - I especially enjoyed the video game scene, as well as their more adult activities. But as their time grew shorter, some of their old doubts and fears started to creep in. I ached for both of them as those fears kept them from talking to each other about their plans. I wanted to shake Derek for acting on those fears, and I cried for Amy's heartbreak. I loved the support - and the lecture - that she received from her friends, opening her eyes to some things she hadn't thought of. I adored Derek's big moment. He was sweet and vulnerable and finally able to say the words that Amy needed to hear.

I also enjoyed the backdrop of Luke and Eva's wedding. It's always fun to revisit couples from earlier books. Even brief mentions of others brings back fond memories of their stories and gives the opportunity for a peek at their continuing happiness.

Allegiances - Cynthia Eden (HI #1636 - May 2016)

Series: Battling McGuire Boys (Book 6)

Private investigator Sullivan "Sully" McGuire has a reputation for danger. He's spent most of his life tracking the men who murdered his parents. The one woman who sees past Sully's predatorial pursuit is the wife he abandoned years ago. But Celia James has returned, this time with a target on her back. In order to save Celia, Sully is forced to resurrect old demons. New dangers -- and dormant desires -- bring Sully and Celia closer…and old enemies even closer.

Very good second chance story and conclusion to the series. Sully is the brother with the most dangerous reputation, brought on by the events of his past. From the search for those who murdered his parents to a CIA op that went horribly wrong to the apparent betrayal of his wife, Sully is haunted by things he sees as his failures. The last thing he expects is for Celia to turn up at his office with new information on his parents - and a request for help.

Sully may have broken her heart, but she has never given up on her love for him. Consumed by her own guilt over their shared past, Celia has used her time and her contacts to search out the truth about his parents' deaths. Unfortunately, that has put a target on her back as well as his.

The action, both physical and emotional, began early and never let up. Sully had finally realized the truth about their past, and now that she was there didn't want to let her go. But Celia had been hurt too badly and refused to open herself up to more of the same. I ached so much for both of them. Sully, because he still loved her and knew how badly he had screwed up. All he wants is the chance to make it up to her and show her how much he cares. Celia, because she still loves him, too, and is afraid of what it would do to her if he turned his back on her again. I enjoyed seeing Sully work to regain Celia's trust as they pursued the leads and tried to uncover the truth behind his parents' deaths. I loved Sully's big moment at the end.

The conclusion of the series also meant finally discovering who killed the McGuire parents. Throughout the series, we've seen how those deaths affected each of the siblings, and their determination to find the truth. I loved the scene involving Celia, the sheriff, and the safe house, and Sully's actions to keep her safe. The increasing intensity of the attacks that were meant to stop them showed how desperate the perps were to keep their secrets. The final confrontation was a real nail-biter. The bad guy wasn't a complete surprise by the end, as several clues had been given. But his motivations were a surprise along with an unexpected revelation.

Saved by the Sheriff - Cindi Myers (HI #1792 - July 2018)

Series: Eagle Mountain Murder Mystery (Book 1)

He’ll protect her back.

But will he win her heart?

Sheriff Travis Walker doesn’t blame Lacy Milligan for hating him -- he jailed her for murder. But now he’s exonerated her, and the handsome lawman needs her to find the real killer. Will she overcome her hatred to help? As she relents, violence explodes -- someone wants her dead. With time running out, their investigation deepens…and ignites sparks of attraction neither ever expected.

Fantastic start to the new series. Three years earlier, Lacy was convicted of killing her boss due to the investigative work of a young deputy. He later went on to become sheriff, in part because of that investigation. Then Travis found evidence that proved she was innocent and worked just as hard to set her free. While she's grateful to be free, she wants nothing to do with him.

Travis had done his best back then, but now the guilt is eating him up. First, for causing Lacy to be imprisoned to start with, and second, because the real killer is still on the loose. He wants nothing more than to find out who it is and put them away, and he thinks Lacy can help him - if she's willing.

This book caught my attention from the beginning and didn't let go until I'd read the last page. I completely understood Lacy's feelings toward Travis and didn't blame her at all. I loved the fact that Travis understood also, but was still hopeful that she would help. It quickly became obvious that someone did not want Lacy involved and would do anything to stop her. It was intriguing to see the various steps that Lacy and Travis went through, with each one bringing some new piece of information to light. It also seemed that every time they appeared to get closer to something important, there would be another attack, each one more intense than the last. My mind was also caught up in trying to figure out who it was. There were several possibilities, and each one had the motive and/or the capability to carry it out. The final confrontation had me on the edge of my seat, and though it solved the immediate puzzle, there are still some unanswered questions. I can't wait for the rest of the series to see how it all works out.

I also enjoyed the development of the relationship between Lacy and Travis. There were sparks between them from the start, though neither wanted to admit it. Lacy began the story hating Travis for what he had done. She also couldn't help noticing how attractive he was, which didn't make her happy at all. Travis remembered Lacy from when they'd been in school and seeing each other around town. He'd even thought about asking her out until everything went bad. Now he's attracted to her but figures she won't want anything to do with him. When the attacks started happening, Travis became very protective of Lacy. It was also sweet to see how Lacy was protective of him. I loved how, as they worked together and got to know each other, both of them were able to let go of the past and see where the new feelings would take them. The danger they were in acted like a booster rocket to those feelings and their attraction intensified. Even more, I liked how they plan to take their time to explore their feelings and give Lacy a chance to adjust to her new future.

Her Cowboy's Triplets - Sasha Summers (HWR #1690 - May 2018)

Series: Boones of Texas (Book 7)

A PLACE TO CALL HOME

Recovering from a toxic first marriage, single mom India Boone wants nothing more than a fresh start for her and her five-year-old son. Coming home to Ft. Kyle, Texas, was only supposed to be a stepping-stone along the way. But then India runs into the man who’s always been her rock, childhood pal Brody Wallace, and suddenly she’s not so eager to leave.

Having carried a torch for India since grade school, Brody’s thrilled the attraction finally seems mutual -- except India’s still got one foot out the door. As much as it kills him, with precocious triplet daughters to worry about, he needs more than a no-strings fling. But how can he make India see that the home she’s looking for is right under her nose?

Very good book. India has come back to Fort Kyle while she gets back on her feet. After escaping from an abusive marriage, all she wants is to move on. But when she runs into her childhood best friend Brody, she begins to remember the good things about her hometown.

Brody has been in love with India since they were kids. His own marriage and divorce sent him back to Fort Kyle, where he plans to raise his triplet daughters in the small town where he grew up. Seeing India again revives his long-buried feelings.

I enjoyed the development of the relationship between India and Brody. There were plenty of challenges for them to overcome. One of the biggest was India's determination to leave Fort Kyle as soon as she can. She has a rocky relationship with her father, and she doesn't want that to affect her son. There is also the ongoing feud between her father and Brody's father that makes a relationship between them awkward at best when it comes to their families. Brody has so much going on in his life that fitting in a relationship seems impossible. He is helping his father with the ranch and their businesses, as well as taking care of his daughters. To top it off he has been shanghaied into running for mayor. But burying those feelings again proves to be impossible.

I loved watching the sparks fly between Brody and India as she realizes that she is looking at him as more than a friend. But she is afraid to risk her heart again, especially with someone who is now rooted in Fort Kyle. I loved the way that Brody knows her so well and finds little ways to show her how she belongs. He also senses that there was more to her marriage than she has said, and his protectiveness comes out. I liked seeing India begin to trust again and give in to her attraction to Brody. But she isn't all the way in yet and insists that all she has to give is short term. I ached for her and her fears about what the family feud would do to their relationship. I loved how Brody wouldn't give up, and the steps he took to make it happen. His big moment at the end was sweet and romantic.

The kids in this book were adorable. I loved Cal and how close he was to his mom. They had a terrific relationship. I loved how good he was with Brody's girls, especially Amberleigh. I really enjoyed the scenes where just saying Cal's name would get her to cooperate. The triplets were terrific too. Each one had her own distinct personality. I think Amberleigh was my favorite, especially when it came to her shoes. I really enjoyed seeing how they brought out the softer side of Brody. They bonded with India quickly and seeing the whole group together it was obvious they were meant to be a family.

Master of Seduction - Kinley MacGregor (Avon - Jan 2000)

Series: Sea Wolves (Book 2)

NO MAN COULD MASTER HER

All lovely Lorelei Dupree had in mind was helping her fiancé and the city of Charleston by setting a trap for the infamous pirate Black Jack Rhys. She certainly never intended to let him kidnap her. And she most definitely had no intention of losing her heart to a man so skilled in the arts of love that they called him the master of seduction.

Black Jack Rhys had a score to settle with an old enemy. Kidnapping his adversary's fiancée seemed like the perfect answer. But the man who'd won the hearts of a thousand women hadn't counted on falling in love himself....

Fun story about two equally stubborn people. Jack is a pirate, bent on revenge against the man responsible for a good friend's death. He has the reputation of a ruthless pirate and an expert seducer of women. Lorelei is the belle of Charleston and recently engaged to her childhood friend and crush, Justin Wallingford.

The story opens with Lorelei bragging to her friends about her ability to charm any man and to get her way in anything she wants. At the same time, Jack has arrived in disguise, looking for information to further his plans for revenge. Lorelei catches his eye, and he asks her to dance. For a few moments, the sparks fly between them, leaving Lorelei attracted and confused before Jack disappears.

The next night Justin has succeeded in getting Lorelei to help him with his plans to set a trap for Jack, with Lorelei playing the part of a barmaid in a waterfront tavern. I was disgusted with Justin at this point. What man willingly puts the woman he supposedly loves in that kind of danger? Worse, he doesn't believe her at first when she identifies the man. I rather enjoyed Jack's spur-of-the-moment decision to take Lorelei hostage and carry her back to the ship. He told himself it was to ensure that the senior Wallingford followed, but there was definitely a personal interest there too. Lorelei is furious and more than a little scared - she's heard the stories about what Jack is capable of.

I really enjoyed the development of Jack and Lori's relationship. The sparks between them were strong from the beginning, as was the connection. I loved seeing Lori stand up to him, even when she was scared. It was pretty funny to see him get all offended when she accused him of planning to rape her. That was just the first of the things that soon had Lori realizing that there was more to Jack than his reputation.

Jack is also known for his reputation with women, and he is determined to get Lori into his bed. He makes it clear that that is all he wants - he makes no promises and doesn't believe in love. Lori is determined to resist and makes a bet with Jack that she can have him on his knees declaring his love before he can get her into bed. What neither realizes at the time is that they are both in danger of losing their hearts. There are some very terrific scenes of the two of them together, getting to know each other. Jack finds himself wanting to do little things to make her happy and comfortable, though the idea of a pirate ship stocked with fancy linens and furniture was a bit hard to believe. I also loved the scene where Lori stumbled onto Jack when he was asleep, with only the essentials covered up. Her fascination led her to try to recreate what she saw in a sketch, and a hilarious attempt to complete the picture. I enjoyed seeing them grow closer, neither one wanting to admit that their feelings were involved. The question became, what would happen when the Wallingfords and the English navy caught up with them. The ending was quite satisfying, with a couple of unexpected twists.

I also enjoyed the secondary characters. Jack's son Kit was pretty adorable in his mix of boy and young man. I loved the way that he worshipped Jack, which was a good indication of Jack's true character. I also loved the other members of the crew, from the truly salty pirates to the men like Henri and Tarik. It was also unusual to see so many women on a pirate ship, and I liked the way they made Lori a part of their group so easily.

The whole revenge theme was interesting. I could see Jack's determination because of what was done to his foster father/mentor. But it was also clear that there was more to it than that. It didn't take too long to suspect the other cause, and I wondered how that was going to play out. I must admit that I found Admiral Wallingford to be less admirable than I had hoped, but he did redeem himself somewhat at the end.

A Pregnant Courtesan for the Rake - Diane Gaston (HH #1353 - Nov 2017)

Series: Society of Wicked Gentlemen (Book 3)

Claiming the courtesan's child…

It's been more than three months, but Oliver Gregory still remembers the exquisite night he shared with a beautiful woman in Paris. Discovering her working at the discreet London gentlemen's club he owns comes as a shock…even more so when he realizes she's pregnant!

Oliver knows the pain of being an outcast and will do all in his power to ensure his child is not born illegitimate. Cecilia will return to his bed…as his wife!

Good book about two lonely people with difficult lives who are brought together by chance. Cecilia is an Englishwoman left penniless in Paris after the war when her soldier husband dies in a duel. To support herself, she goes to work as a courtesan, but one with an unusual way of conducting business. Knowing what it's like to be hungry, she uses some of her wages to feed the street children, which brings her to the attention of Oliver.

Oliver is part owner of a gentlemen's club in London. He has come to Paris to get ideas to take back home. Wandering along the banks of the river, he finds himself reflecting on his life. The bastard son of a nobleman and his Indian mistress, he was taken to England with his father. He was raised by his indifferent father and an unpleasant stepmother who lost no opportunity to put him down. School was no better until he made a few good friends, with whom he later opened the club. But he's grown tired of the club's activities and wonders what it would be like to have a normal life. It's at this point when he meets Cecilia and is captivated by her combination of strength, beauty, and vulnerability. They spend a lovely day together just seeing the sights and go on to have a passionate night together. But that is all they can have, and Oliver returns to London, where he can't forget her.

Fate isn't done with them yet. Cecilia finds herself pregnant and without a job. She returns to England, hoping to reconcile with her family. When that doesn't happen, she has no choice but to find work and is hired as a hostess by one of Oliver's partners, unbeknownst to him. To find the woman he can't forget working in his own club comes as quite a shock, but not as big as the one he's about to get. Oliver had never seen himself as a husband and father, but he refuses to let a child of his suffer as he has done. The problem is getting Cecilia to agree.

I enjoyed the development of Cecilia and Oliver's relationship. Both of them have major trust issues that need to be overcome. Cecilia was badly abused by her husband and refuses to put herself under the control of another man. Oliver may seem nice now, but her husband had been nice at first, too. I ached for Cecilia and her fears, as she keeps a wary eye on Oliver. His bouts of temper do not help his cause. I really liked Oliver. He is an honorable man who wants to do right by Cecilia. I loved seeing his protectiveness, even though he has his doubts about the truth of her claim. The more time they spend together, the closer they grow, but it is still a roller coaster of a relationship. They must fight their own doubts and fears, as well as interference from outside forces. I liked how it was Oliver who first understood his feelings and tried to make Cecilia see. I ached for him when she let her fears win. His feelings of loss were so intense I cried for him. I loved the ending, as Cecilia finally believed the truth about Oliver and his feelings for her. The epilogue was great.

As with the previous books, Oliver and the others still wonder what happened to their friend and partner, Nicholas. In this book, I got the feeling that one particularly obnoxious character may have had something to do with Nicholas's disappearance. I am looking forward to the final book to see if I am right.

Gabe - Ruth Cardello (Smashwords - Nov 2016)

Series: 7 Brides for 7 Brothers (Book 2)

Gabe Brannigan is a Californian real estate mogul who is used to seeing property in terms of dollar signs. When his father dies unexpectedly and leaves him the family ranch, he’s annoyed rather than grateful. The conditions of his inheritance include living on the ranch for six months before being able to sell it.

He’s ready to walk away from the deal until he meets the sexy, motorcycle-riding ranch caretaker. She’s brash and outspoken, rough around the edges. Definitely not his style, but that doesn’t stop him from wanting her.

Craving her.

Throwing all caution aside and deciding to have her.

Josephine Ashby has found the perfect place to hide until Mr. Sexy Eyes shows up and announces he is moving in.

A man who doesn’t believe in anything, finds himself believing in her.

But will it be enough?

Good book with a nice blend of romance and intrigue. Gabe and his brothers recently lost their father. Gabe has inherited the family ranch, a property that he has no intention of keeping. However, before he can sell it, he is required to live on it for one month. He's ready to walk away from it until his aunt coerces him into spending a weekend at the ranch. There he meets Josie, who acts as the ranch caretaker while the regular one is away.

Josie is hiding out on the ranch after her father's death. She believes that he was murdered and the company he worked for has covered it up by accusing him of stealing and embezzlement. Now she believes that they are after her. She is determined to finish her father's work and clear his name. Having Gabe underfoot is not in her plans.

I liked both Gabe and Josie. She is a brilliant woman, feisty, independent, and determined. Her father was her parent and her best friend, and without him, she is a little bit lost. She doesn't trust easily. Gabe is equally determined, focused on his business, and avoids relationships. After the death of their mother, Gabe's father buried his grief in work, leaving his sons in the care of nannies. As a result, the boys grew apart from their father and each other.

From the moment they met, there were sparks between Gabe and Josie. I laughed out loud at their first meeting, with Gabe distracted by his attraction to her, and Josie taking him down and holding him at gunpoint. Gabe is determined to get her into his bed, but it isn't long before the woman herself fascinates him. He also realizes that she's keeping secrets and is determined to uncover them. Josie is equally attracted to Gabe but doesn't want him to get caught up in her troubles. I enjoyed seeing them dance around each other at first, then give in to what was happening to them. It was fun to see the business-only Gabe making time to spend with Josie. And I love how Josie helped Gabe remember the good times on the ranch and look at his father through new eyes. I loved it when Josie got to the point where she trusted Gabe enough to tell him the truth, and the way that Gabe discovered unexpected feelings of protectiveness. There are a couple of hiccups due to communication and trust issues, but in the end, Gabe and Josie realize that they belong together. Gabe loved Josie just the way she was, and Josie was the piece of Gabe he didn't know was missing. The last chapter was sweet, romantic and heartwarming.

The intrigue of the story was good. I loved the project that Josie was working on and her determination to finish it and clear her father. I also understood her wariness around Gabe and his about her. I liked how he took her concerns seriously once he believed. I liked seeing him take steps to protect her, though his take-charge attitude did create a few problems. I hurt for Josie when she thought he'd betrayed her, and loved that she didn't just wallow in her pain. The scene on the ranch with Josie and the security guys was hilarious. I loved Gabe's part in the resolution.

I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

Colton K-9 Cop - Addison Fox (HRS #1744 - Nov 2017)

Series: Coltons of Shadow Creek (Book 8)
            Coltons (Book 69)

For bomb squad K-9 officer Donovan Colton, nothing about a failed car bombing in his Texas hometown makes sense. Why would anyone target quiet, secretive accountant Bellamy Reeves, and why does his canine partner instantly trust her? Donovan is searching for his own mysterious past, but he can't resist solving the riddle that is beautiful Bellamy.

After experiencing a tragic loss, Bellamy knows how hard it can be to trust. Threatened by her former employer, she is reluctant to open up to dangerously sexy Donovan -- or his adorable dog! But the harder Donovan works to keep her safe, the more Bellamy longs to let what's between them turn into something more -- even as their lives are poised to be blown apart…

Good book with a sweet romance and exciting suspense. I loved the opening, where Bellamy met Donovan and Alex when Alex was just a puppy. It was a sweet and realistic moment, especially when it comes to puppies and Legos. I liked the connection that formed between Donovan and Bellamy so quickly and was sad that circumstances kept them from pursuing it.

Fast forward five years. Bellamy has recently lost both parents and is estranged from her sister. With the holidays approaching, she has buried her loneliness in her work. When she receives an odd email, she takes it to her company leadership, who immediately accuse her of wrongdoing and fire her. Even worse, her car explodes in the parking lot, with Bellamy barely escaping with her life. Imagine her surprise when the K-9 Officer team of Donovan and Alex arrived on the scene.

I liked both Donovan and Bellamy. Both felt like real people with believable problems. Bellamy is hurting over the loss of her parents and her problems with her sister. She's independent, and a bit stubborn, both of which contributed to those problems. I liked her devotion to her parents and their care, though she was a bit blind to just how much of an impact it had on her life. I liked that she had the backbone to stand up to those who tried to accuse her of wrongdoing and still could admit when she was wrong. I liked Donovan and his relationship with Alex. He has a much easier time relating to his dog than to his own family, haunted by the feeling that he doesn't belong. I was a little disappointed by the way that he pushes them away, believing that they only took him in out of duty, and not seeing that he was a choice, not a burden.

I liked the development of the relationship between Donovan and Bellamy. The connection that they had felt before was still there, and both of them felt it. That connection added to the protectiveness that Donovan felt for Maggie and his determination to keep her safe. Being together nearly 24/7 gave them plenty of opportunities to get to know each other. There were some very sweet scenes between them, some of them including Alex. It was interesting to see how each of them could see the other's family issues, but had trouble admitting their own. I liked how, as their feelings for each other grew, their attitudes toward their families also began to change. It still took a dangerous situation for them to realize just how strong those feelings had become.

The suspense was also good. The person and motivation behind the trouble are revealed early, but that doesn't diminish the intensity. From the email and explosion to the final confrontation, my attention remained on seeing how Donovan and Bellamy worked together to solve the mystery. There was also an interesting twist involving Donovan's past.

I'm not sure why this is part of the Coltons of Shadow Creek series. It takes place in a different town, with a different branch of the family. The Shadow Creek Coltons are only mentioned briefly.

Capturing a Colton - C.J. Miller (HRS #1955 - Aug 2017)

Series: Coltons of Shadow Creek (Book 6)
            Coltons (Book 67)

Real-estate tycoon Declan Sinclair has a score to settle with on-the-run felon Livia Colton. He can't change his tragic past, but he can demolish her onetime estate. But while coming to terms with his most hated enemy, Declan bumps heads with Livia's youngest daughter, the alluring Jade Colton…

Having always felt isolated from her own family, Jade finds satisfaction in rescuing and rehabilitating Thoroughbred racehorses. And when she finds herself in Livia's crosshairs, Jade turns to Declan for comfort and protection. Can she really trust a man who's sworn to take down the entire Colton clan -- once and for all?

Good continuation of the series. It is now known that Livia Colton was hiding out in her old estate, but she has eluded capture once again. Declan bought the estate as a step in his revenge against the Coltons, but now that he has it he's not quite sure what to do with it. Even his hatred of the Colton family undergoes some changes now that his foster sister is marrying a Colton. He is also intrigued by Jade Colton.

Jade is another Colton who feels out of step with her family. Affected by the abuse received from her mother and witnessing the death of her father, she tends to hold herself apart from other people. She even keeps a distance from her siblings, though since Livia's escape from prison that has begun to change a little. Her life revolves around the horses that she rescues and rehabilitates.

I enjoyed seeing the relationship develop between Jade and Declan. Both of them have suffered because of Livia, and it is that commonality that provides a base for their relationship. It doesn't take long before they spend as much time together as possible, each one intrigued by the other. I especially liked how Declan quickly realized that Jade is nothing like her mother. Getting to know her better also opened his eyes to the fact that the other Coltons are also good people. I loved Declan's protectiveness toward Jade, not just because of what is going on, but also because he sees and appreciates how hard she works. It was really sweet to see how Declan takes care of her. Jade is also protective of Declan and steps way outside her comfort zone to take care of him in his New Orleans home after he is shot. It was an eye opener for both of them when she had to go home without him, and they realized how much they missed each other. As events in Shadow Creek heated up, they grew ever closer. I loved Declan's big moment and the surprise he had for Jade.

The suspense of the story was good. All of the Coltons were on edge, certain that Livia was still in the area and biding her time. Though she wasn't seen, she still made her presence known at Edith and River's wedding, and again after Maggie had her baby. The Coltons also had to deal with a protest group called Victims of Livia Colton and the way that it was trying to drive them all out of town. There were some very unpleasant confrontations, with people accusing the siblings of hiding Livia or knowing where she is. The final showdown with Livia was intense, as she finally tried to get what she had come back for. I loved the teamwork that brought her down. Even so, there are still some unanswered questions at the end of the book.

I continued to enjoy the importance of family. The siblings have been brought closer together by their need to stand against both Livia and public opinion. Each one has learned the importance of being able to support and be supported by the others. It hasn't always been an easy lesson, but once learned it isn't forgotten. The relationship between Declan and River was also part of this book. I loved Declan's stunned surprise at the action that finally brought them together. Declan was also able to face another part of his past and ended up with more than he expected.

The Colton Marine - Lisa Childs (HRS #1951 - July 2017)

Series: Coltons of Shadow Creek (Book 5)
            Coltons (Book 66)

Hired to renovate his family's former mansion, River Colton hopes to find answers to his deepest questions. Plagued by memories of his fugitive mother, the ex-Marine finds danger to his life in the estate's secret chambers -- and danger to his heart in Edith Beaulieu, its beautiful new guardian.

But someone doesn't want Edith or River in the seemingly haunted house. When Edith falls victim to too many "accidents" -- and falls hard for River -- the Texas loner risks everything to protect her. If the ghosts of Coltons past lurk in the shadows, it's up to Edith and River hunt them down…

Good book. In Pregnant by the Colton Cowboy River discovered that the man he thought is his father isn't, leaving him with questions about who he is. Determined to find answers, he's sure that his family's former home holds the answers. All he has to do is find a way inside so that he can search. When the house is sold, he talks the new owner's representative into letting him help with the renovations.

Edith has worked for her real estate mogul boss and friend for years. She's not certain why he's so determined to have this property considering how much work it will be to fix it up, and why he insists on so much secrecy. Because of that, she is suspicious of River's presence on the property at first but quickly takes him up on his offer to help.

Good mix of suspense and romance right from the start. There were multiple things going on that kept interest and tension high. Throughout the series, Livia Colton has succeeded in avoiding recapture. There have been sightings and suspected activities, but her evasion continues. More and more of her crimes have been exposed. Edith's arrival at the property begins another intense episode. Edith's introduction to the house her employer has purchased began with a frightening experience that set the stage for the entire book, highlighting her dedication to her job and her stubborn independence. River is equally stubborn in his desire to find answers, and later in his determination to protect Edith. Edith's employer adds another layer of mystery as his reasons for buying the mansion are slowly revealed. Last, but not least, is the mysterious "watcher" who is so intent on keeping people out of the house.

I loved River's protectiveness as he responded first to Edith's scream, and throughout the book as the attacks continued to escalate. There is no doubt about the chemistry between him and Edith, though both have issues that make them reluctant to give in. Edith has problems with trust and believing that love really exists. She is suspicious of River at first but gradually comes to trust him. River is haunted by things that happened on deployment, plagued by guilt that he hadn't done enough to keep his men safe. He also believes that no one would want him now because of his scars. I loved seeing the two of them grow closer as they worked together on the house. I ached a bit for River, whose insecurities were aggravated by his jealousy over what he thought was the relationship between Edith and Declan. I also hurt for Edith, whose fears caused her to push River away when she really wanted to keep him close. The revelations of both Declan's and River's motivations felt like a betrayal to her. It took some hard-won honesty to finally put the past to rest and let River and Edith look to a future together.

The suspense of the intruder was very well done, with their point of view adding another layer of intensity. I could feel Edith's unease at the way she felt she was being watched, especially knowing that she really was. The escalating nature of the attacks increased the feeling of danger and kept me on the edge of my seat. The end confrontation was intense but left some things unresolved for the next book.

I enjoyed seeing other members of the family as they made appearances in this story. I especially enjoyed seeing more of Knox and his contemplation of a future job. Mac was also a big part of this book, as he and Edith take steps to repair their relationship. We also see more of Jade, who is now the only unattached Colton. She is convinced that Livia is after her and the fear makes a huge impact on her life.  I'm looking forward to her story.

Cold Case Colton - Addison Fox (HRS #1948 - June 2017)

Series: Coltons of Shadow Creek (Book 4)
            Coltons (Book 65)

The most shocking Colton family secret yet is revealed!

Claudia Colton has always felt different from her siblings. But the fashion designer doesn't expect a PI with knowledge of her family to show up in her tiny Texas hometown. The tall, blond stranger on her doorstep announces Claudia might not be the daughter of criminal mastermind Livia Colton…but then who is she?

Widower Hawk Huntley, hot on the trail of a cold kidnapping case, is stopped dead in his tracks by Claudia. He vows to protect her in any way possible -- heart, body, and soul -- as they track down the truth of her identity. But will Claudia's hidden past -- and a gun-wielding stalker -- change everything for Colton?

Good book. Claudia has returned to Shadow Creek after living in New York and pursuing her fashion design dreams. Now she has her own boutique in town, where she also tries to live down her relationship to her criminal mother. Though she hasn't told her family, she was also escaping a relationship that had turned abusive. She was surprised to receive a visit from a private investigator with the news that she might not be Livia Colton's daughter after all.

I liked both Claudia and Hawk. Claudia is beautiful, intelligent, and talented. In previous books, her love for her family is clear and that continues in this one. She is also protective of them and doesn't want her troubles to intrude on their lives. I ached for her too, because although she had the love of her siblings, she never felt like she really fit in with them.

Hawk is a man driven by the events of his past. He feels guilty about the death of his wife, haunted by the idea that he had failed to protect her. Because her murderer was never found, he has devoted himself to working cold cases, hoping to bring closure that he never had to families of other victims. He has also closed himself off emotionally, unable to deal with the pain of his loss.

The relationship between Claudia and Hawk was a fast one. From the moment Hawk appeared in her shop, the chemistry between them was hot. But more than just attraction, there was also a deeper connection that was evident from the start. I loved how Claudia could see past Hawk's public persona to the hurting and vulnerable man beneath. I really liked the way that she embraced what was happening and was honest about her feelings to Hawk. She wasn't going to let him hide behind his past and let something special slip away. I ached for Hawk, who had closed down and pushed people away for so long that allowing himself feel again was a painful process. I loved seeing him let Claudia in and start to heal. The conversation between them about not forgetting his wife was sweet and heartwrenching.

The suspense of the story was also good. There were several things going on. First, as with all the books in the series, is the missing Livia Colton and the concern over where she is and what she is doing. Second is Claudia's fear that her ex is going to show up and make trouble for her. Third is whether the news that Hawk brought is true. Fourth is whoever is behind the troubles that Claudia is experiencing, which may be linked to the others. Each attack on Claudia raised new questions about who it could be. The growing intensity of those attacks increased the fear for Claudia's safety, and the occasional glimpses of the attacker's point of view intensified those fears. My suspicions were all over the place as I tried to decide who it was. The final confrontation had me glued to the pages as I waited to see how it was going to turn out. The identity of the attacker was not one I had thought of, which made the conclusion even more satisfying. The revelation of Claudia's parentage was not a surprise and was handled very well. I especially loved Mac's reaction to it.

I enjoyed the continuing theme of the importance of family. In spite of, or maybe because of, the reality of their mother's crimes, the Colton siblings are very close. I loved the way that they watch over each other and support each other.

Pregnant by the Colton Cowboy - Lara Lacomb (HRS #1944 - May 2017)

Series: Coltons of Shadow Creek (Book 3)
            Coltons (Book 64)

A cowboy puts his life on the line for the woman expecting his child in The Coltons of Shadow Creek!

Determined to steer clear of the horrors his villainous mother brought on his family, rancher Thorne Colton keeps to himself. That means resisting Maggie Lowell. The last time he succumbed, passion took control. But when an explosion nearly claims her life, Thorne discovers their night together yielded more than sizzling memories.

Pregnant and under Thorne's protection in Shadow Creek, Maggie isn't sure where the bigger threat lies. Out in the open, she's a killer's target. On his ranch, she's in close quarters with the man who's driven to keep her and their child safe, but broke her heart once and might do it again…

Another good entry into this Coltons series. Thorne is the son of Livia Colton, a criminal mastermind who has recently escaped prison. He has spent the last ten years keeping mostly to himself, away from the gossip caused by his mother. He'd rather spend his time with the horses.

I loved Thorne. He is a quiet, gentle man. Raised mostly by his father, Mac, he had a fantastic example of a parent to counteract the misery caused by his mother. Thanks to Mac's example, he also has close relationships with all of his half-brothers and -sisters. He has also had quite the crush on his father's bookkeeper, Maggie. He hasn't done anything about it for two reasons. First, his father would likely frown on him getting involved with someone who works for them. Second, he doesn't want the gossip around him to affect her life.

I loved Maggie, too. She is smart, loving, and kind. Maggie has had a crush on Thorne for several years, but she has hidden it well. She has a few insecurities that keep her from believing that he would be interested in her anyway.

I loved the development of their relationship. After all the time of them harboring their secret crushes, fate steps in and creates a chance for them. When Maggie's car dies at the ranch during a storm, Thorne invites her to his apartment to wait for the tow truck. One thing leads to another, and they spend an amazing night together. But instead of it being the start of something wonderful, Maggie discovers that Thorne is suddenly avoiding her. I liked the fact that she allowed herself a short time to be sad about it, then determined to move on. That might have continued, except that Thorne was nearby when her car exploded. It was obvious at that point that Thorne cared deeply for her. I loved how he stayed with her to the hospital. That meant that he was there when Maggie got the unexpected news that she was pregnant.

Though Maggie is quite ready to brave the trials of being a single mother, she is also very willing to have Thorne be a part of the child's life. His determination to be everything that Livia wasn't just makes her love him more. I loved the way that Thorne's protectiveness kicked in and he took Maggie home with him to take care of her. All that time together gave them a wonderful opportunity to get to know each other better. I loved watching Maggie settle in to ranch life and gain deeper insights into what makes Thorne the man that he is. I loved seeing all the sweet things that Thorne did for Maggie to make her stay easier, and how they showed the depth of his feelings for her. I loved how he was able to tell Maggie about his childhood and how it influenced his actions after their night together. Their feelings for each other grew in spite of the danger around them. I loved how they got together at the end, and the epilogue was especially sweet.

The suspense of the story was great. From the moment Maggie's car exploded to the final confrontation, the intensity continued to build. Because of Livia's escape from prison, and the type of person she is, she is the prime suspect in the attacks. My heart was in my throat during the snake scene, and I wasn't sure how Thorne was going to get Maggie out of that situation. There were several instances from the attacker's point of view and I began to suspect who it was. The final confrontation was intense, and I loved Thorne and Knox's teamwork to bring it to a successful end.

The Scotsman Who Saved Me - Hannah Howell (Kensington - Oct 2017)

Series: Seven Brides for Seven Scotsmen (Book 1)

From New York Times bestselling author Hannah Howell comes a brand new series featuring the MacEnroys, a family of seven strong, seductive Scottish brothers who have come to America with nerves of steel -- and who will take no prisoners when it comes to love…

A brutal attack on Emily Stanton’s family has left her for dead . . . until she is found in the woods by a handsome stranger with a thick brogue who vows to protect her. There’s only one problem: As a woman with a noble English background, she has no business keeping company with such a man.

For Scotsman Iain MacEnroy, Emily’s high-tone accent is a bitter reminder of the oppressive regime he left behind. The last thing he needs is to be burdened by the needs of a beautiful, blue-eyed Englishwoman. But taking care of elegant, educated Emily begins to transform Iain in ways he never imagined. Could it be that the deep divisions from the old world no longer apply in the new -- and that Iain and Emily can share a passion as lush and wild as the Scottish highlands themselves?

Good start to the new series. Emily and her nephew narrowly escaped death when her family was attacked, but she was injured. Iain and his brothers came upon the cabin shortly after the attack and, realizing that someone had survived, track them down and take Emily and Neddy home with them. The brothers quickly discover that Emily and Neddy are in danger and are determined to protect them.

I liked both Emily and Iain. Emily is the granddaughter of a duke who gave up her easy life in England to come to America with her sister and brother-in-law when they fled from the person trying to kill them. She is smart, adaptable,  and loving. As more of her story is revealed, we see how quickly she adjusted to a simpler and harder life than that she was used to. I also loved how she had such a clear picture of the danger they were in and what they needed to do to escape it. Her relationship with her little nephew was fantastic and it was easy to see the depth of the bond between them.

Iain is the oldest of the seven brothers. He is old enough to remember the events that led to their leaving Scotland. Watching their laird and his wife kick his family off their land has given him a deep disgust and hatred for those of the gentry. As the oldest in the family, he is the one who took charge after their parents were killed after they reached America. He is stubborn, loyal, and responsible. It took years of hard work, but the brothers have established themselves and have the respect of those around them. Iain also watches out for others and has taken other people under his protection.

There were sparks between Emily and Iain from the beginning, though both try to resist it. Emily doesn't want her problems to put the brothers in danger. Iain mistrusts Emily because of who she is, but can't stay away from her. The relationship between them has a rollercoaster feel to it, as Iain and Emily give in to the sparks, but then Iain pulls away because of who, or what, she is. He does this multiple times, and each time I wanted to shake him. Emily was equally frustrated by his actions. As Emily settled in and made a place for herself there, Iain slowly started to see that not all gentry were like the ones he had known before. It wasn't an easy prejudice for him to give up, and I liked seeing the honesty of his struggle. It was very fun to see him acknowledge his feelings for her and decide that he needed to "woo" her, even though he had no idea what that entailed. His efforts were sweet and rather awkward, and it took a while for Emily to realize what he was doing. There were no major misunderstandings to drive the couple apart, just a few incidents of learning how to communicate better. There was a neat little twist at the end with an unexpected guest at their wedding.

There was a sense of danger throughout the book as Emily, then Iain and his brothers, worked to protect young Neddy from those who mean him harm. We learn early that Neddy is the heir to a dukedom and that a greedy family member is determined to eliminate him. The attacks increase in intensity as the story goes on. I loved the determination that the brothers showed to keep Emily and Neddy safe. It was nice to see that Emily trusted Iain and listened to his instructions, rather than go off on her own and make matters worse. The final confrontation brought it all to a satisfactory end.

Somebody's Baby - Donna Alward (St. Martin's - Apr 2017)

Series: Darling VT (Book 3)

Veterinarian Rory Gallagher chose a different path from his brothers, both of whom became first responders in the lovely little town of Darling, Vermont. Rory's always had an affinity for animals and the ladies. Known for his impressive track record in breaking hearts, Rory never meant to hurt anyone; he's just never been in a hurry to settle down. It's not as if he needs to pay a visit to the town's famed Kissing Bridge to magically find love. He'll know The One when he sees her. . . right?

Oaklee Ferguson is the kid sister of Rory's best friend and, even now that she's all grown up, remains immune to the pet-doctor's charms. When she shows up at Rory's clinic late one night devastated after hitting a stray dog with her car Rory's so-called bedroom eyes are the last thing on her mind. Still, his care and kindness toward the dog, and his concern for her feelings, catches Oaklee by surprise. . .and soon the two (and rescued dog makes three ) begin to share a deep connection that neither could have ever imagined. Could it be that love has been waiting for them by the bridge all along?

Good second chances/friends to lovers story. Both Oaklee and Rory are longtime residents of Darling and have known each other for most of their lives. Rory and Oaklee's older brother were best friends, while Oaklee was the tagalong "pest." By the time that Oaklee was in high school, she had quite the crush on Rory. But when Cam noticed Rory noticing Oaklee, he shot Rory down and pulled the "treat her like your own sister" card. Both buried their feelings and moved on. Now both are back in Darling, victims of love gone wrong, and coping in different ways. Rory has become a serial dater, avoiding any hint of commitment by only dating a woman a few times at most. Oaklee simply keeps herself too busy to date at all.

I enjoyed the development of Oaklee and Rory's relationship. They've seen each other around town, but not spent any time together. Rory still thinks of her as Cam's little sister, until the night she comes banging on his door, needing his help because she hit a dog with her car. Suddenly he's noticing how pretty she is, remembering the girl she used to be, and sensing loneliness that he can relate to. After she leaves, he can't get her off his mind. Oaklee is in the same situation. Rory decided that what Oaklee needs is a furry companion and talked Oaklee into taking care of the dog they call Buster until his family is found or they find him a forever home. Oaklee is reluctant, as she has never had a pet and thinks she's too selfish to care for one. I loved Rory's methods, and she soon finds herself with a dog. I loved those first few days as both she and Buster learned what was expected. Rory doesn't just fade away, he stays involved, finding all kinds of reasons to check up on them.

I liked the sparks of attraction that kept pulling them toward each other. But both are also very wary and make it clear that they aren't looking for relationships, though being friends is okay. However, neither one can quite keep things in the friend zone, which creates a great deal of confusion for them. Every time their attraction heats up, one or the other panics and pulls away. I ached for Oaklee, who was slowly learning to trust again but wasn't sure if she could believe that Rory wouldn't let her down. She also knew he was holding back and didn't want to risk her heart on someone who wasn't all in. I loved seeing her reach the point where she was able to completely open up about her past, and how she hoped for the same from him. Rory was a harder nut to crack. He'd suffered a double loss and really resisted the idea of taking another chance. He deals her quite a blow when his fears keep him from trusting her with his whole history. When he realizes what he has done and what his feelings are, he has to come up with a way to fix it. I loved his "go big" moment and how it showed how much he had changed too.

Baby, I'm Yours - Stephanie Bond (HQN - May 2011)

Series: Southern Roads (Book .5)

Emory Maxwell has come home to the small town of Sweetness, Georgia, with one goal in mind . . . to get his childhood sweetheart Shelby Moon to marry him. They've been in love since the second grade, but Shelby's father is determined to keep his daughter in Sweetness, not moving around the country as a soldier's wife. No matter what she chooses, Shelby knows she'll hurt one of the men she loves.

But when a tornado rips through town, will she and Emory lose their chance to be together forever?

This is a short prequel to the Southern Roads series, where a tornado all but wipes the town of Sweetness, Georgia, off the map. The series, Baby, Drive South, Baby, Come Home, and Baby, Don't Go, chronicles the efforts of the Armstrong brothers to rebuild the town they love.

The story opens with Emory on his way home to Sweetness, on a very short leave from the army. He desperately misses his girlfriend Shelby and is determined to ask her to marry him. The biggest obstacle is her father, who is equally determined to keep Shelby safely in Sweetness. And then there's poor Shelby, who loves Emory and wants to marry him, but doesn't want to hurt her father.

I felt bad for Emory, who did everything right. He saved up for a ring, has solid plans for his future, and even went to Shelby's dad to ask for his blessing. But that stubborn old man doesn't want to let go of Shelby. When Emory takes his proposal public, he sort of puts his foot in his mouth, which causes Shelby's pride to kick in and she sends him away. I ached for his pain, as he fled to his boyhood sanctuary of the town water tower.

I ached for Shelby too, as she was caught between a rock and a hard place. She immediately regrets the things she said, but can't go after him right away, because of issues at the grocery store. She also needs to be honest with her father about her wants and needs.

When Emory spots the tornado from his place on the tower, his first thoughts are for Shelby and the town's safety. My heart was in my throat at his dangerous predicament and I held my breath until I was sure he was safe. The intensity of his fears for Shelby leapt off the page. My heart melted as Emory says all the things he didn't say to Shelby when he proposed while he's trying to dig out the ruins of the grocery store. I loved her response, and that of her father. I loved seeing all the townspeople pull together to give them a special wedding day in spite of the devastation.

Colton Family Rescue - Justine Davis (HRS #1916 - Oct 2016)

Series: Coltons of Texas (Book 10)
            Coltons (Book 59)

A brokenhearted cowboy finds his second chance with a single mom under siege in the newest Coltons of Texas romance!

Being rich and powerful didn't save T. C. Colton from painful betrayal. His beloved Jolie Peters walked out on him for cold, hard cash offered by his controlling mother…or so he believed at the time. Now, with a killer hunting down her young daughter -- a witness to a murder -- Jolie turns to T.C. to keep them safe.

But trusting her again isn't easy for T.C. at first…although their attraction is still hotter than a Texas summer and he's crazy about little Emma. For a short time in a remote cabin hideout, T.C., Jolie and Emma feel like family, until the killer closes in, threatening every dream they're building together…

Good second chance story with some action and suspense thrown in. Jolie and TC had been very close four years earlier until she took the money his parents offered and ran. He still has not forgotten or forgiven Jolie for that betrayal, nor has he seen Jolie since then. Until she and her daughter walk into his office asking for help.

Jolie had loved TC with all her heart, but she couldn't stand up to the threats made against herself and her daughter. After leaving the Colton ranch, she has made a new life for herself and Emma. Then Emma witnesses a murder and the killer comes after her, leaving Jolie nowhere to turn for help except TC.

The initial meeting between TC and Jolie is pretty rough. He's still bitter over her departure and not inclined to be very helpful. His walls against being hurt again are built pretty high.  Jolie is still hurt that he let them go so easily and never even came after her for an explanation. I liked Jolie's fierce mama bear persona as she let him know exactly what drove her away. Her explanation set him back a bit because it differed quite a bit from his mother's version. He's still wary though, and ready to refuse his help, when he comes face to face with little Emma. He had loved the little girl, and much of his pain was wrapped up in how much he missed her too. He can't bring himself to refuse anything that will keep her safe. TC whisks them away to his "refuge," a cabin on a distant part of the ranch where he's sure they will be safe.

It was interesting to see the rekindling of TC and Jolie's relationship. Both of them are wary at first, with too many memories and too much hurt between them to be easy with each other. Both are determined to make the best of things for Emma. There are some really sweet scenes between TC and Emma as she wiggles her way back into his heart, and opening the door for his feelings for Jolie. The chemistry between them is still as strong as it had been before, and when they are together that way, everything else fades into the background. However, the memories of what happened before are never far from their minds, making both of them a little oversensitive and prone to take remarks the wrong way. With TC realizing that his feelings for Jolie never went away, it's pretty clear that a confrontation with his mother isn't far off. I loved that face-off when it happened, especially seeing TC and Jolie stand up to her together. It will be interesting to see if those results hold. The confrontation also made TC and Jolie realize that they belonged together. The icing on the cake was their return to the main ranch house, where they were met by the rest of the family. I loved the support they received from the "good" Coltons - Reid, Zane, Piper, and Alanna. The best part was seeing Fowler and Jolie go head to head and Fowler being the one to back down.

The suspense of the story had two parts. The main one being the murder that Emma witnessed and keeping her safe. Most of that occurred at the beginning and end of the book, with the first attack and then laying low while they tried to find the murderer. Things got very intense at the end when Emma was grabbed again. My heart was in my throat as TC and his horse Flash went up against a murderer in a car. There was a surprising twist to the resolution that I hadn't seen coming at all.

The second part was the continuing question of what had happened to Eldridge Colton. Once again, Fowler has a theory and doesn't hesitate to take it to the police. His victim of choice this time is Jolie, whom he accuses of killing Eldridge because she wants more money. I liked TC's belief in her innocence on that point and his help in clearing her name. It was amusing to see his reaction to where she was and who she was with the night in question. It was satisfying for them both to be able to thwart Fowler's intent. Unfortunately, it doesn't stop him from setting his sights on someone else, which is the lead into the next book.

High-Stakes Colton - Karen Anders (HRS #1912 - Sept 2016)

Series: Coltons of Texas (Book 9)
            Coltons (Book 58)

What's a cowboy to do when he falls for the woman he's investigating? Find out in the latest Coltons of Texas romance!

Soul-scarred Texas Ranger Jake McCord is no stranger to hardship and heartache. Assigned to solve a kidnapping case, Jake enters Colton Valley Ranch as a horse whisperer…and watcher. His primary suspect? The victim's daughter, Alanna Colton.

Alluring Alanna is the picture of competence and compassion as she trains horses and helps troubled teens work the ranch. Jake is immediately drawn to her, and their mutual attraction only intensifies as he struggles to keep a clear head on the case. But his troubles are just beginning, as others on the ranch arouse suspicion and threaten all Jake and Alanna hold dear.

The search for the missing Eldridge Colton goes on. Jake McCord is a Texas Ranger who has been sent undercover to the Colton ranch as a horse whisperer. His assignment is to keep an eye on Alanna Colton, daughter of the missing man and possible suspect.

Alanna runs the horse training section of the ranch and has started a program to help troubled teens. She butts heads constantly with her older brother Fowler, who has purchased a horse that Alanna believes is dangerous. She is skeptical of anyone who claims to be a "horse whisperer" and isn't happy that Fowler has hired Jake.

There are sparks between Jake and Alanna from the moment they met. First up is the fact that Alanna doesn't want Jake there and doesn't believe in what he does. She is bluntly honest and has no trouble telling him so from the beginning. Jake is equally honest when he tells her that she's wrong and that she will soon see it. There are also the sparks of attraction that fly between them. Jake takes advantage of those sparks and lays the cowboy charm on thick, flirting with Alanna. He has no trouble using those sparks to get closer to her. Alanna feels the sparks also, but she has no intention of getting involved with a footloose charmer. She has enough on her plate.

I enjoyed the development of the relationship. I liked the banter between Jake and Alanna as they got to know each other. Though his flirtation had started as part of the job, Jake quickly found it turning real. I liked the way that he paid attention to what was going on around her and saw how she was treated. It was sweet to see how he tried to be there for her, giving her a shoulder to lean on if she wanted to and encouraging her to believe in her dreams. It doesn't take long before he believes in her innocence, though he needs evidence to satisfy his superiors. He also feels increasingly guilty about his deception. Alanna is intelligent and determined to make her programs work. I liked her dedication to her teen program and the compassion and kindness she shows them. She is wary of Jake, but can't deny the attraction she feels to him. She is also surprised at how easy it is to open up about her dreams and frustrations when she talks to him. The heat between them is intense, and when they are together their problems fade into the background. I ached for them both when the truth came out. Alanna felt betrayed and used. Jake believed that what they had together had been destroyed by his deception. I loved Alanna's big moment at the end as she went after what she wanted most. Her surprise for Jake was awesome.

The suspense of the story was very good. Jake has his work cut out for him as he watches the various members of the Colton family, especially Alanna. His suspicions are aroused when someone accuses Alanna of having threatened her father, and he has to weigh the evidence against his personal feelings. After witnessing several confrontations among assorted Coltons, Jake realizes that most of them have the motivation and capability of being involved in Eldridge's disappearance. One character, in particular, seems especially motivated to deflect suspicion onto Alanna, which rings my alarm bells. But nothing is resolved, leaving everyone still wondering what happened to Eldridge.

There is a second issue giving Jake fits. There is a ranch hand there who Jake believes was involved in the death of his partner. Though told to focus on his assignment, Jake still keeps an eye on this man. Problems with him escalate as he involves Alanna's teens in whatever is going on. The final confrontation was intense, and I was glued to the pages until it was all resolved.

There are some deeply emotional parts to the book also. Jake is dealing with the death of his younger brother and his partner, which have had him tied up in knots for months, to the point where it affected his work. He is drowning in guilt over both. I ached for him as he finally confronted those issues and put them to rest. His conversation with his father was especially emotional for both of them. Alanna has tried burying her pain in her work with the horses. It is difficult when she is constantly undercut by her obnoxiously controlling brother. I liked how Jake helped her face the things that were holding her back, giving her the strength to go after what she wanted. I ached for her the day that she thought she saw her father in a crowd and chased after him.
